Rangers vs Red Wings: Rangers Return From Break with 4-2 Win Over Detroit

After a week and a half long break, the New York Rangers finally returned to action this evening and picked up a 4-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings. Artemiy Panarin registered yet another multi-point evening and moved into a tie for fourth place in the league with David Pastrnak. In addition, Igor Shesterkin picked up career win number three after making 23 saves throughout the game.

1st Period

No scoring.

2nd Period

Pavel Buchnevich (9) - Mika Zibanejad (22) & Chris Kreider (16) - 9:23 2nd Period

The Rangers controlled the play early and often in this game, and they were able to jump out to an early 1-0 lead just over nine minutes into the second period. Chris Kreider was able to spring a 2-on-1 rush with a quick stretch pass, and found Mika Zibanejad on the far side of the ice. Zibanejad was able to make a crisp, hard pass over to Pavel Buchnevich driving the net, and Buch finally scored a long overdue goal.

Chris Kreider (18) - Adam Fox (22) & Mika Zibanejad (23) - 11:56 2nd Period

A couple minutes later, Chris Kreider picked up a goal of his own by planting himself right in front of the opposing goaltender. Adam Fox made a great stutter step at the blue line and was able to get a shot on net through the traffic in front. Fox’s shot wound up being at a perfect elevation for Kreider to get a deflection on the puck, and he beat Jimmy Howard over the glove.

Artemiy Panarin (27) - Jesper Fast (14) & Tony DeAngelo (26) - 19:18 2nd Period

We went nearly two weeks without watching the greatness of Artemiy Panarin, but he certainly didn’t disappoint in his return to action. With under a minute remaining in the second period, Panarin broke into the zone and danced around Alex Biega as he drove to the net. Panarin was able to toe drag around the defenseman, made a move to his backhand, and shoveled a shot past Jimmy Howard.

3rd Period

Mika Zibanejad (19) PPG - Tony DeAngelo (27) & Artemiy Panarin (43) - 5:02 3rd Period

Early in the third period, the Rangers extended their lead yet again and took a commanding 4-0 lead with a power play goal courtesy of Mika Zibanejad. Zibanejad was able to pick his spot after receiving a pass from Tony DeAngelo, and wired a heavy wrist shot towards the net. Chris Kreider provided yet another perfect screen in front of the goaltender, and he played another huge role in the goal.

Robbi Fabbri (12) - Dylan Larkin (24) - 5:59 3rd Period

After being held scoreless for over two periods, the Red Wings finally broke Shesterkin’s shutout at the 5:59 mark of the third period. Brady Skjei was beat to the puck in right corner of the ice, and Dylan Larkin made a great pass out front to Robbi Fabbri. The backcheckers were several steps behind the play, and that allowed Fabbri plenty of space to walk in and pick his spot.

Valtteri Filppula (4) - Trevor Daley (5) & Robbi Fabbri (14) - 10:59 3rd Period

Exactly five minutes later, Detroit made things interesting as they were able to pull back within a pair of goals. Trevor Daley started the entire play with a quick pass from just inside the blue line, and found Valtteri Filppula wide open in front of the net. Unfortunately for the Rangers, no one was covering the middle of the ice and Filppula flipped the puck over Igor Shesterkin.

Despite giving up two late goals in the third period, the Rangers played extremely well after being out of action for the last ten days. Detroit has obviously been struggling quite a bit this season, but the Rangers took care of business and were the better team in this game. Following tonight’s win, the Rangers will finish off their home-and-home set with a quick trip to Detroit before returning home for four straight games at Madison Square Garden.
