Rangers vs. Red Wings: Rangers Win Streak Ends with 3-2 Loss in Detroit

The New York Rangers had a chance to keep their winning streak alive this evening, but were defeated 3-2 in overtime by the Detroit Red Wings. The Rangers gave up yet another late third period goal send this game to overtime, and gave up the winning goal with five seconds remaining. Here is tonight’s goal breakdown.

1-0 Rangers
Kevin Shattenkirk (1) - Assists: Tony DeAngelo (4) & Kevin Hayes (6)

The Rangers first goal of the game during the first half of the double minor penalty assessed to Martin Frk. The first power play unit moved the puck around tremendously, before Kevin Shattenkirk collected the puck in a prime shooting lane. Shattenkirk absolutely wired a wrist shot over Jimmy Howard’s shoulder with Jimmy Vesey providing the traffic in front.

2- Rangers
Neal Pionk (3) - Assists: Mika Zibanejad (8) & Pavel Buchnevich (3)

Exactly 40 seconds after their first power play tally, the Rangers doubled up their lead with another power play goal on Neal Pionk’s third of the season. It was much of the same compared to the first unit, with Pionk finishing off the play with a deceptive play at the blue and threw a puck at the net. He was able to catch two fortunate bounces off of Red Wings’ players and beat Jimmy Howard just under the pads.

2-1 Rangers
Justin Abdelkader (4) - Assists: Gustav Nyquist (12)

This goal gave the Red Wings some life and it came as a direct result of a miserable turnover by Brendan Smith. Gustav Nyquist was able to strip the puck from Smith as he was coming out from behind the net, and quickly pivoted back to find Justin Abdelkader wide open on the back door. Henrik Lundqvist didn’t stand much of a chance on the goal, and the Red Wings were right back in this game.

2-2 Tie
Andreas Anthanasiou (4) - Assists: Frans Nielsen (7) & Niklas Kronwall (3)

Aside from the minor blip on the radar earlier in the period, the Rangers appeared poised to close this game out. However, the Red Wings had one play in the neutral zone that gave them a chance, and they took full advantage of the opportunity. Frans Nielsen made an excellent feed to Andreas Athanasiou cutting outside and he buried the puck on a drive to the net.

3-2 Red Wings
Dylan Larkin (7) - Assists: Andreas Athanasiou (3) & Mike Green

This was probably one of the worst 3-on-3 overtimes played by the Rangers this season, and it all started with the puck management. The Rangers just weren’t controlling the puck like they should’ve been, and it ended on a horrific clear by Kevin Shattenkirk that led to the game winning goal. Andreas Athanasiou was able to feed a beautiful pass over to Dylan Larkin, who deflected the puck under the crossbar to give the Red Wings the 3-2 win in overtime.

Following tonight’s loss to the Detroit Red Wings, the New York Rangers will be right back in action tomorrow night against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
