Report: New York Rangers And Marc Staal Finalizing Six-Year Extension
The Rangers and Staal are finalizing a deal to keep the defenseman in New York for the next six years.
According to multiple reports (first reported by Larry Brooks) the Rangers are finalizing a six-year contract extension in the realm of $5.7-million per year with defenseman Marc Staal.
Eliotte Friedman has all but confirmed the deal is done:

— Elliotte Friedman (@FriedgeHNIC) January 16, 2015 There had been a lot of speculation since the beginning of the year about the Rangers' contract talks with Staal. Apparently the two sides hit a snag when the dollars simply didn't match up, but it appears they've moved past that.
At first blush, this is a lot of money and a lot of term for a defenseman who has had another rougher post-injury season. And now the flexibility the Rangers so desperately need the next few years is evaporating quicker than water in the desert.
Staal was pegged to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season. We'll have a lot more analysis of this pending deal once the dotted line is signed.
