The New York Riveters will look to continue their hot streak when they host the Buffalo Beauts today at 4:30PM in Newark, NJ. The Riveters will take to the ice twice in two days this weekend, today against the Beauts and tomorrow against the league-leading Pride. New York currently sits in second place with five points alongside Buffalo, but the Riveters have the advantage with a game in hand over their upstate rivals. This weekend double-header will prove to be crucial for the Rosies, and particularly for forward Morgan Fritz-Ward who announced yesterday that she will be retiring from professional hockey following the weekend.
The Riveters began their current three-game point streak against these very same Beauts in Buffalo in the first game of a double-header. New York took the first game 3-2 in dramatic, last-minute fashion before adding a point in the standings the following night in a 3-4 overtime loss. Since then, news of the league's financial concerns has come to light which has caused some panic and worry if the players would refuse to participate in the upcoming games. However, the Riveters roused a resounding response with a 4-0 win against the Connecticut Whale last weekend. As long as this team is on the ice, they are a force to be reckoned with.
Meanwhile, Buffalo is fresh off of a 0-5 loss against the dominant Boston Pride. The Beauts will look to fend off the Riveters and establish an edge in the standings, but it will not be an easy task. Buffalo has been plagued with inconsistency since the start of the season. Streaky scoring and unreliable goaltending may very well follow the team to Newark which will be only the second road game of the season for the club that currently holds a 2-4-0-1 record.
Players to Watch
New York Riveters:
#18 F Rebecca Russo (6 GP | 3 G | 4 A) - Russo has exploded onto the scene alongside fellow rookie forward Miye D'Oench to provide a desperately needed jolt to the New York Riveters offense. The Connecticut native has been lighting up the scoreboard in the past weeks and the team will look to her to lead the charge against a Buffalo team which may be susceptible to surrendering goals in bunches.
#27 F Shiann Darkangelo (7 GP | 2 G | 4 A) - The Dark Angel scored the game-winning goal in overtime the last time these two teams met. This should come as no surprise considering the fact that she has been credited with an astounding 32 shots on goal. Despite the staggering number of pucks she puts on the net, she only has two goals thus far. She will be eager to break through, but it will have to come against a New York defense and goaltending corps that has been finding its stride.
New York should be riding a wave of confidence following their stellar performance last week, but Buffalo is a team that can come out of nowhere and burn you. With deadly players like Kelley Steadman, Shiann Darkangelo, and Kourtney Kunichika, the Riveters would be remiss to let the Beauts establish their game. However, if New York can build off of their recent performances, there is no reason the point streak should stop today.
