Rumor: Rangers linked to Sergei Shumakov
The Rangers are looking at another free agent European winger
Yesterday rumors surfaced that the Rangers were linked to CSKA Moscow winger Sergei Shumakov. Shumakov, who turns 26 in September, might become an unrestricted free agent if he is able to get out of his contract with CSKA. But, this is the KHL we are talking about, so that will be a lot easier said than done. We’ve also seen reports and rumors coming out of the Russian media proven to be false and inaccurate more than a few times this summer (see: Kovalchuk, Ilya).

That initial rumor was given more credence when KHL insider Aivis Kalniņš also reported that Shumakov was looking to hold out in the hopes that CSKA would release him. Again, the Rangers were linked to the Russian winger. Rumors are always tricky; especially when we have to run stuff through Google translate. What we do know is that Shumakov has not reported for CSKA’s training camp. We also know that he’s an intriguing option for New York as a middle-six winger.

Shumakov put up a KHL career high 40 points in 47 games with CSKA last season. The right-handed winger has had three consecutive seasons with at least 16 goals and 33 points in the KHL. According to Emmanuel Perry’s NHLe model, Shumakov’s production in the KHL last season was roughly equivalent to a 52.1 point season in the NHL.
The Rangers have a dearth of right-handed forwards on the roster, which is one of the reasons why the signings of Ville Meskanen and Michael Lindqvist were so intriguing. Right now Mika Zibanejad and Jesper Fast are the only forwards with right-handed shots who are locks for the team.
