Ryan Callahan Scores Four Goals as Rangers "White-Out" Flyers 7-0
"BRING BACK THE WHITES AT HOME!!!!"
That is the cry after today's 7-0 humiliation of the Philadelphia Flyers at Madison Square Garden. After struggling at home in their traditional blues and the new "Heritage" jerseys, the Rangers may have been looking to emulate some of their road successes by rocking the white jerseys at home, circa 1994.
Ryan Callahan gets the Rangers off to a rare early start with a goal 51 seconds and then notched his second goal of the game on the power play as the Rangers completed a dominant first period.
Sean Avery had a goal wiped off in the second. He was being pulled down in the crease, and it was ruled that he made the dreaded "distinct kicking motion" as the puck went in. Where was the penalty on Andrej Mezsaros for pulling him down? Good question, we are still waiting for that call.
No matter, because Mats Zuccarello kept the party going with a goal just a few minutes later, and Ryan Callahan followed it up with the hat trick goal to put the Rangers ahead 4-0, and sent Flyers goaltender Bryan Boucher to an early shower. For Callahan it was the first hat trick of his career.
But Callahan wasn't quite done abusing Flyer goaltending. Four minutes into the third, with Sergei Bobrovsky now in goal for Philly, Callahan added his second power play goal of the game, to make it four on the day, the second four goal game of the season for the Rangers, which is ironic for a team that has had such trouble scoring. Callahan has ten goals and fifteen points in sixteen games since returning from his hand injury.
Artem Anisimov and Zuccarello added late goals, and Henrik Lundqvist made twenty four saves to give the Rangers their second shutout of a contender for Lord Stanley's Cup in the last six games.
The Rangers play again Wednesday in Anaheim as they prepare for a two game swing to California.
