The New York Rangers came out of the gate incredibly slow, allowing the Florida Panthers to register the first four scoring chances of the game, including a ringing post off the stick of Shawn Matthias. After taking a 4 minute penalty, Sean Avery jumped out of the box, took a feed from Marc Staal, and registered the Rangers’ 1st chance at 9:55 of the first, with the rebound landing perfectly on the stick for a goal by Derek Stepan. From that point, the teams traded chances throughout the game, even once the Rangers took a 2 goal lead off the stick of Ryan Callahan. The final tally, like the shot totals, favored the Panthers, 20-16, and 16-13 at even strength.
