Heading into tonight’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes, the New York Rangers are coming off of one of the more inconsistent and statistically confusing games of the season. The final game tally was 17-16 in favor of the Rangers. While this makes some amount of sense in an (eventual) 1 goal game, the wonders of score effects heavily influenced the final total. From the point the Atlanta Thrashers led 5-2 in the third period, the Rangers had 6 of the final 8 scoring chances, including 3 in the 4 seconds that led up to Todd White‘s first goal. Without those chances, the Thrashers ‘won’ the scoring chances 14-11.
On the positive side, the Rangers came out strong in both of the 1st two periods, limiting Atlanta to zero chances for the first eight minutes of both the 1st and 2nd periods. The negative, Atlanta proceeded to even up those periods anyway.
