With Rangers in Crisis, Something Has to Give

Chris Drury has pushed this team into the public spotlight in a way we have never really seen. Is it backfiring on him?

It has been a whirlwind week for the New York Rangers. An organization that deeply suppresses internal drama from the public eye, Chris Drury has thrust the team and it's many flaws into the spotlight.

Nine days ago the Rangers owned a 12-4-1 record. There were cracks showing through, but the record seemed to keep things calm and collected. Since then the Rangers have lost five games in a row. After the second loss in a row it was reported that Drury was dangling captain Jacob Trouba and defacto captain and fan favorite Chris Kreider.

It was a stunning turn of events. The Rangers, historically, never do this in a public setting, and yet here we are. (We extensively talk about all of this on this week's episode of the podcast – which is free for all.)

On Nov. 29 the Rangers lost to the Flyers – a 3-1 scoreline that only looked close because the Rangers still employ the best goalie in the NHL. The Rangers were outshot 11-0 at one point in the first period, and the veterans continued to play with a country club level of intensity.

During the third period, it was speculated on 32 Thoughts that Drury could be on the hot seat.

Which led to my realization that the Rangers as an organization are going to break. It's just a matter of which side breaks first: the players or the General Manager.
