Traverse City Recap: Adam Fox Registers Five Points in 7-4 Win Over Dallas

Just over 24 hours after getting smoked by the Columbus Blue Jackets 6-2 in their opening game, the New York Rangers matched up with the Dallas Stars. After going with Igor Shesterkin the first afternoon, the Rangers elected to start their other promising goaltender in Adam Huska.

This game started off a little bit better for the Rangers, and it was obvious from the opening faceoff that they were a much more structured unit. While the Rangers were able to limit the odd-man rushes through the neutral zone, Dallas still found a gap in space and took an early 1-0 lead. Jason Robertson was able to get a piece of the puck as it came on net, and he deflected the puck behind Adam Huska.

Despite giving up the early goal, the Rangers jumped right back into the game and scored a nearly identical goal at the other end of the ice. Adam Fox did made an excellent hesitation move at the blue line to open up a shooting lane, and was able to get his shot through traffic. Karl Henriksson was in the right place at the right time to get a stick on the puck and tied up the game for the Rangers.

Early on in the second period, the Rangers had an opportunity on the power play and they took full advantage. Yegor Rykov was able to collect a loose puck off of a rebound, and scored on the empty net to make it a 2-1 game in favor of New York. After assisting on the first two goals, Adam Fox picked up a goal of his own just a few moments after Rykov’s tally. The goal came off of a broken play in the high slot, and Fox snapped a quick wrist shot through traffic to give the Rangers the 3-1 lead.

After playing very well to open the second period, the Rangers fell back on their lead a bit and allowed Dallas to jump right back into the game. Joel Kiviranta brought the Stars back within a goal after burying the perfect cross-ice feed from Ty Dellandrea off to the right of Adam Huska. Kiviranta quickly added his second of the game a few minutes later and Dallas was suddenly back in this game heading into the third period.

As quickly as Dallas made this a game, the Rangers regained their two goal lead early in the third period. Matthew Robertson picked up his first goal of the tournament on an impressive drive to the net, and chipped the puck past the goaltender. Almost immediately after Robertson’s goal, Adam Fox registered his fourth (!) point on the evening with another marker in the goal column.

The Stars made things interesting late in the third period as Joel Kiviranta finished off the hat trick to bring Dallas back within a goal. However, the Rangers immediately restored their two goal lead once again as Ryan Dmowski drove to the front of the net and slammed home the rebound. Vitali Kravtsov picked up the primary assist on Dmowski’s goal and brought his point total to three on the evening. Nick Jones iced the game for the Rangers with a little over a minute remaining in regulation time, and gave the Rangers a 7-4 win.

Overall, the Rangers high profile players were all over the ice this game and rightfully so. Adam Fox was on his own level compared to everyone else, and that’s certainly an encouraging sign for the Rangers with main camp right around the corner. Following this evening’s victory over Dallas, the Rangers will have tomorrow off before returning to action on Monday night against the Minnesota Wild.
