With Veleno Out, Rangers Turn to Luke Glendening on a PTO
A faceoff specialist and penalty killer with 13 NHL seasons behind him is auditioning for a spot. What does a tryout cost the Rangers, and what could it bring?
With Joe Veleno out for the next couple of months, the New York Rangers have signed veteran Luke Glendening to a professional tryout (PTO). The 37-year-old center split time with the New Jersey Devils and Philadelphia Flyers last season, during which he collected two goals and seven assists in 70 games played.

Throughout his 13-year career, Glendening has played for five different teams in the league. After spending eight seasons with the Detroit Red Wings, Glendening spent a pair of seasons with the Dallas Stars and a pair with the Tampa Bay Lightning. In 935 career games played, Glendening has collected 85 goals and 90 assists for a total of 175 points.
Glendening is regarded as a reliable fourth-line center. Throughout his career, Glendening has excelled as a faceoff specialist who can kill penalties and play a smart two-way game. At 5-11 and 190 pounds, Glendening has brought an element of speed to his role with prior teams, but at this stage of his career, he has surely lost some of his stride.
With Justin Dowling currently serving as the team's fourth-line center, signing Glendening to a PTO is certainly a worthwhile move. He's a guy who won't cost the team anything and brings an abundance of valuable experience to what is currently the youngest team in the league.
The Rangers will face off against the Anaheim Ducks on home ice Monday, and Glendening could make his season debut.
