Here are some stats, notes, and observations from Day Two of the 2019 IIHF U18 World Championship.

2019 U18 Worlds: Notes from Day 1

  • Jack Hughes (F) | #1 NHL Central Scouting (North American Skaters) - You’ve probably heard of Hughes. He’s a pretty big deal. Well, yesterday he scored four goals and notched three assists in USA’s 12-5 win over Slovakia. Oh, and all three of his assists were primary. Also, he put nine shots on goal. So that happened. Hughes is now up to eight points in his first 120 minutes of hockey in Sweden.
  • Cole Caufield (F) | #8 NHL Central Scouting (NA Skaters) - Caufield, who scored a hat trick yesterday against Sweden, scored four goals and picked up two assists for USA. He’s now up to seven goals and 18 shots in his first two games at the U18 Worlds. Last year, Oliver Wahlstrom led all American skaters with seven goals in seven games. So it’s safe to say that Caufield is off to a pretty decent start./
  • Max Čajkovič (F) | #91 NHL Central Scouting (NA Skaters) - Čajkovič was ranked 59th among North American skaters at the midterm, but fell in the second half of the season. He picked up a primary assist and was one of two players on Team Slovakia that managed five shots on net in yesterday’s big loss. He also picked up two power play goals against Russia on April 18.
  • Brayden Tracey (F) | #21 NHL Central Scouting (NA Skaters) - Tracey had another huge game for Team Canada yesterday. He picked up two goals and a primary assist in addition to putting seven shots on goal against Switzerland. Tracey is now up to four goals in two games at the U18 Worlds.
  • Thomas Harley (D) | #11 NHL Central Scouting (NA Skaters) - Harley is a 6-foot-3 defender with a left-handed shot. TSN’s Bob McKenzie ranked him as the 22nd-best prospect in this year’s draft. Harley had a goal, a secondary assist, and five shots against Switzerland yesterday. He’s the first Canadian defenseman to score a goal at this year’s Worlds./
  • Victor Söderström (D) | #3 NHL Central Scouting (European Skaters) - Söderström has been called the “complete package” by scouts and analysts. Through two games at the 2019 Worlds, the 5-foot-11 right-handed defenseman has notched three shots but has yet to pick up a point. Söderström scored four goals and earned three assists in 44 games in the SHL this season with Brynäs IF.
  • Leevi Aaltonen (F) | #29 NHL Central Scouting (EU Skaters) - Aaltonen, an alternate captain on Team Finland, is an undersized and creative winger. He picked up back-to-back primary assists in Finland’s failed third period comeback against Belarus yesterday. This season he picked up 36 points in 29 games for KalPa’s junior team./
