Rangers vs Oilers: Rangers Defeated in Overtime by Edmonton

The New York Rangers were defeated in overtime this evening as the fell to the Edmonton Oilers by a final score of 3-2. Fueled by goals from Brendan Lemieux and Brett Howden, the Rangers clawed back from a two-goal deficit early in the third period. Unfortunately, just 35 seconds into overtime, Connor McDavid setup Leon Draisaitl for the game-winning goal.

Connor McDavid (34) - Alex Chiasson (12) & Leon Draisaitl (46) - 6:08 1st Period

The Oilers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in this game as Connor McDavid registered his 34th goal of the season. Alex Chiasson setup McDavid with a beautiful tap pass off to the right of the net and McDavid snapped a quick shot past Alexandar Georgiev.

2-0 Oilers
Matt Benning (3) - Leon Draisaitl (47) & Zack Kassian (9) - 8:02 1st Period

Nearly two minutes later, the Oilers struck yet again with a cannon of a shot from Matt Benning. Georgiev complained to the officials right after the goal went in and it was immediately waived off. However, the Oilers challenged the play the call on the ice was somehow overturned. The Rangers had a pretty good argument as Georgiev was clearly hit with a stick as the puck came in on net, but the Oilers were able to take a 2-0 lead.

2-1 Oilers
Brendan Lemieux (11) - Kevin Shattenkirk (22) - 11:29 2nd Period

Following a pretty lackluster first period, the Rangers came out looking for answers in the second period. It took them a little bit of time, but Brendan Lemieux brought the Rangers back within a goal for his 11th on the year. It was a bit of a strange goal as Mikko Koskinen completely whiffed on a routine save and the Rangers found themselves back in the game.

2-2 Tie
Brett Howden (5) - Brendan Lemieux (5) - 1:33 3rd Period

The Rangers kept battling as the puck dropped for the third period, and they were rewarded with the tying goal just 1:33 into the period. Brendan Lemieux did an excellent job of maneuvering through the neutral zone and got the puck to the front of the net. Brett Howden followed up the play and chipped home to loose puck to tie the game up at a 2-2.

3-2 Oilers
Leon Draisaitl (42) - Connor McDavid (64) & Darnell Nurse (27) - 0:35 Overtime

It didn’t take long for the Oilers to catch the Rangers sleeping in overtime and Leon Draisaitl sent the Rangers packing just 35 seconds in. The first attempt by Darnell Nurse was turned aside by Alexandar Georgiev, but Connor McDavid immediately found Leon Draisaitl cutting to the net and the rest is history.

Following a deflating overtime loss to Edmonton, the Rangers will have a scheduled off day tomorrow before returning to action on Wednesday night against the Vancouver Canucks.
