Official: New York Rangers Acquire Rights to Adam Fox

The New York Rangers have acquired the rights to unsigned draft choice Adam Fox from the Carolina Hurricanes.

In exchange for Fox’s rights, the Rangers sent their 2019 second round pick and a conditional 2020 third round pick to the Hurricanes. If the defender plays in 30 games at the NHL level with the Rangers in 2019-20, the 2020 third-rounder becomes their 2020 second-rounder.

The Hurricanes acquired the rights to Fox, the Flames’ 66th overall pick in 2016, from Calgary along with Dougie Hamilton and Michael Ferland in exchange for Elias Lindholm and Noah Hanifin. Carolina held his rights until August 15, 2020, but when it became clear that he wouldn’t be signing with them, the question became whether teams would wait for his rights to expire, or trade for them sooner.

Fox, a right-handed defenseman, spent the last three seasons with Harvard University, where he scored 21 goals and 95 assists for 116 points in 97 games. In his junior season with Harvard, he earned 48 points in 33 games, and led the NCAA in points-per-game. He was a finalist for the 2019 Hobey Baker Award, along with Cale Makar and Jimmy Schuldt. Makar, of UMass (and now the Colorado Avalanche) won the award.

General manager Jeff Gorton and the Rangers are reportedly finalizing Fox’s entry-level contract.

The puck-moving defender bolsters the right side of the Rangers’ blue line, which currently features Kevin Shattenkirk, Tony DeAngelo, and Neal Pionk at the NHL level, along with prospects Nils Lundkvist and Joey Keane. He adds to a defensive propsect pipeline that includes left-handed defenders K’Andre Miller, Yegor Rykov, Tarmo Reunanen, Libor Hajek, and Ryan Lindgren.
