It’s here. The opening of unrestricted free agency, one of the most anticipated days of the year for hockey fans, has officially arrived. Today, beginning at noon ET, ink will meet paper and fortunes and fates will be made.

Where Things Stand For New York Rangers Ahead of NHL Free Agency

According to CapFriendly, the New York Rangers have $23,091,867* in open cap space entering the day. That sounds like a ton, but there is a lot of work to be done with the team’s restricted free agents. With that being said, there’s no guarantee that Ryan Strome or Anthony DeAngelo will re-sign with New York. The Rangers have qualified both players, but it came down to the wire with Strome, which is definitely intriguing. There’s also the potential rookie bonuses Tom pointed out in his story, and the $12,994,444 in dead cap money not listed in this breakdown from Cap Friendly. This also doesn’t include Alexis Lafrenière.

At the moment, the needs for the Rangers are a middle-six center and a depth defenseman who can play the left side, but that could change at the drop of a hat. It’s unlikely that New York will make a big splash today, but they could make a few smaller ones to address some of the team’s needs.
