Our final pick of the 2020 Draft is in. pic.twitter.com/XCu3ALhHo4— New York Rangers (@NYRangers) October 7, 2020
Ollas is an 18-year-old netminder that is 6’8” and 238 pounds, and played for Linköping HC J20 in Sweden. He was ranked the No. 7 European netminder by NHL Central Scouting and No. 242 by Future Considerations.
Ollas style in net is like a typical modern well-schooled goaltender; he goes down on his knees extremely early and uses his substantial 6’8 frame to stop pucks and to cut off shooting lanes. He never made any unnecessary movements and has a close to robotic way to handle himself.
This is certainly an interesting pick, but as Shayna pointed out, what’s the harm of drafting a Swedish goalie in the 7th round? ;)
The Rangers select goaltender Hugo Ollas with the 197th pick. I remember another Swedish goalie whose name starts with an ‘H’ being drafted in the seventh round.. #NYR— Shayna (@hayyyshayyy) October 7, 2020
All kidding aside, the Rangers surely love drafting goaltenders, so it isn’t a surprise they used their final pick of the draft on an interesting player like Ollas.
Stay tuned for more in-depth information on this pick in the days to come.
