Rangers Trade Brady Skjei To Carolina Hurricanes for First-Round Pick

The Rangers’ defenseman heads to a division rival.

The New York Rangers have traded Brady Skjei to the Carolina Hurricanes, Blueshirt Banter’s and The Athletic’s Shayna Goldman reports.

Skjei, 25, was drafted by the Rangers in 2012. We’ll update as more information comes in.

In return, the Rangers will receive a 2020 first-round pick, per TSN. Carolina owns both their own and Toronto’s selections, and Blueshirt Banter has confirmed that the Rangers will receive whichever pick of the two is worse.

UPDATE

Here’s the official announcement of the trade from the Rangers:

Carolina has two 2020 first round picks; their own and a 1st they received from Toronto in the Patrick Marleau trade. That Toronto 1st slides to 2021 if it falls into the top 10 of this year’s draft. The conditions of the Skjei trade are such that the Rangers receive the later of the two 2020 picks, so if Toronto finishes in lottery, the Rangers get Carolina’s pick and if Toronto finishes with the better record, the Blueshirts get that pick.
