The New York Rangers selected Czech winger Jaroslav Chmelar in the fifth round with the 144th overall pick. Chmelar is a big, 6-foot-4 winger from Jokerit.

In 2020-21, Chmelar scored five goals and notched eight assists in 15 games for Jokerit’s U18 club and made three appearances with the U20 club. He also had a goal and an assist in five games with the Czech national team at the 2021 U18 World Championship in Frisco, Texas. He averaged 2.0 SOG/GP in that tournament and finished with a +3 plus/minus rating and a single minor penalty.

Chmelar is the sixth forward and second European forward drafted by the Rangers thus far in the 2021 Draft. Thus far, with seven picks made, the Blueshirts have yet to select a single defensive prospect. At the time of his selection, Chmelar was just the fifth Czech player taken off the board.
