Malte Stromwall Placed on Unconditional Waivers for Purposes of Contract Termination

The New York Rangers have placed Swedish forward Malte Stromwall on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract.

The Rangers originally signed Stromwall in April of 2016, and the move was thought to be made because he was a teammate of Robin Kovacs, the Rangers’ former prospect drafted in the third round of the 2015 draft.
Stromwall was coming off a year that saw him score 25 goals and add 17 assists for 42 points in 49 games for AIK of the Allsvenskan league in Sweden.
Unfortunately the success did not translate to North America as he only skated in 44 games for the Hartford Wolf Pack tallying two goals and four assists. He was recently demoted to the Greenville Swamp Rabbits of the ECHL, so this move isn’t the biggest surprise in the world.
At the time the Rangers’ logic was sound. Stromwall was a talented player who appeared to have some upside. It didn’t pan out, so they are giving him an opportunity to go back home and play, and they free up a contract slot in the process.
