New York Rangers News: Sean Avery Clears Waivers (UPDATE)

If there was any concern that a rival team might pick up Sean Avery on waivers, it can be put to bed now. Sean Avery cleared waivers this afternoon, and will either be assigned to the Connecticut Whale or allowed to seek a contract overseas.

UPDATE by Joe Fortunato: The New York Rangers can also try bringing him back through re-entry waivers, where if claimed, the Dallas Stars will still pay $1.9 million of his contract and the Rangers and the claiming team would split the over $1.9 million. That has been confirmed by Puck Daddy and the NHL.

There's conflicting evidence on the above, so, as Dave said in the comments, we'll have to wait and see what happens if the situation unfolds.

Hard to see him getting an NHL job right now, however, since if a team wanted him they would have probably jumped at him yesterday.

Avery was a good soldier for the Rangers, and I wish him the best of luck in all his future endeavors. It's good to see that, for now at least, he won't be able to hurt the Rangers with a rival team. Of course, all that can change as the year goes on. We'll update you on anything that happens, as usual.
