New York Rangers Special Focus Prospect Pipeline Scouting Report: Liam Greentree
From five-goal playoff nights to midseason scoring bursts, we break down what Liam Greentree is becoming, and what it could mean for the Rangers’ future.
We’ve spoken a fair amount about Liam Greentree since he was acquired from the Los Angeles Kings in the Artemi Panarin trade. A 6-4, 216 pound winger who shoots left and plays a prototypical power forward role, Greentree immediately becomes one of, if not the, top Rangers' prospect.
Liam Greentree - Right Wing, Windsor, Spitfires, OHL
Drafted 26th overall in 2024, Greentree was fresh off a 90 point season with 36 goals and 54 assists. The following season, he was named captain of the Windsor Spitfires and nearly notched a 50 goal season, finishing with 119 points spread across 49 goals and 70 assists. He likely would have hit the 50 goal mark had it not been for a two game suspension he had to serve following a questionable hit against the London Knights towards the end of the season. On top of the impressive numbers from that season, Greentree tallied 24 points in 11 postseason games as the Spitfires fell short in the playoff chase to the Kitchener Rangers.
So what do the Rangers get in Greentree?
His strengths surely center around his ability to hold on to the puck and put it in the back of the net. He’s got great hands, a hard and accurate shot, and while he’s not an overly physical player by any means, he has solid size which helps him maintain possession. He doesn’t jump out to me as a playmaker, but as long as he’s surrounded by competent linemates, he’s more than capable of making pretty plays. His skating is a big area of concern, which isn’t abnormal for a player of his style. However, several reports indicate that his skating has been a focus area for him as he continues to develop in the OHL.
This will surely be his final season of junior hockey, so let’s take a look at how he’s doing.
