Henrik Lundqvist Named Rangers’ Representative for 2018 NHL All-Star Game

Lundqvist named an All-Star for fourth time, his first appearance since 2012.

For the fourth time in his NHL career, Henrik Lundqvist is an NHL All-Star. The league released the full rosters, and Lundqvist has been tabbed as the Blueshirts’ representative.

The selection is well deserved, and another honor for Lundqvist. It is very likely though that Lundqvist wishes he weren’t playing in this All-Star game, but instead preparing for a journey to South Korea to represent Sweden for potentially the final time at the Olympics. Lundqvist won gold at the 2006 games in Turin, and silver at the 2014 games in Sochi.

What is done is done, and the All-Star selection makes a lot of sense as Lundqvist at age 35 is in the midst of one of the best seasons of his career.

Among goaltenders in the Metropolitan Division, Lundqvist ranks first in SV% (.924) and saves (1,032), ranks second in appearances (35), is tied for second in shutouts (two), and ranks third in wins (19) and GAA (2.52) in 2017-18.

The Rangers’ leading man is 19-10-4 with a .924 save percentage and a 2.52 goals-against average. Additionally he is third in the league in goals saved above average (GSAA) with 10, and 10th in HDSV% (.845)

Lundqvist’s previous All-Star appearances include 2009, 2011 and 2012. He served as an alternate captain for Team Alfredsson in 2012, and was joined by Marian Gaborik and Dan Girardi as Ranger all stars that season.
