Rangers Agree to Terms With Morgan Barron

While the business on the ice resumes Saturday afternoon with Game 1 of the Stanley Cup qualifier against Carolina, the business away from the ice continued Friday as the Rangers announced the signing of forward Morgan Barron to an entry-level contract that begins next season.

Barron, whom the Rangers selected in the sixth round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, has spent the last three seasons at Cornell University, where he emerged as one of the top forwards for the Big Red. He posted 14 goals and added 18 assists for 32 points on his way to being named a First Team All-American and one of 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Award, given to the top player in college hockey.

The 21-year-old, who spent the season as Cornell’s captain, was named the ECAC player of the year and was part of the All-Ivy League First Team All Star Team after posting team-highs in goals and points on a squad that went 23-2-4 on its way to an ECAC Regular Season Championship.

While it is too early to say New York hit a home run in the sixth round with Barron, the early returns have been positive. The 6’4”, 220-pound center/left wing joins a somewhat thin group of forwards in the Rangers’ system, and depending on what happens this summer with free agency, could see Barron push for a spot on Broadway sooner rather than later. At the very least he will add some talent to the Hartford Wolf Pack who are expected to start play again in December.
