Open Game Thread: New York Islanders vs New York Rangers
After enjoying two days off, the Rangers are back in action tonight, as they’ll look to avoid their fourth consecutive loss and defend home ice against the New York Islanders.
The Blueshirts have started off the pre-season on the wrong foot, getting outscored 12-6 over their first three games, and being generally outplayed by the Devils and Flyers. With only 36 players remaining in camp following the most recent round of cuts, tonight’s lineup will feature a lot more of the team’s regulars than any of their previous contests. The lineup is as follows:

Player to Watch: Joe Morrow
While the bottom of the Rangers’ defense corpsis very much in flux, one of the least talked about players fighting for a roster spot is Joe Morrow. Attending camp on a professional tryout, Morrow is looking to fill a very niche role on the roster. Should the Rangers choose to demote Brendan Smith to AHL Hartford in a cost-cutting move, then the team’s 7th defenseman spot will be unoccupied.
However, that would mean that a young defender such as Adam Fox, Yegor Rykov, or Libor Hajek would be slated to open the season in the press box. If the Blueshirts want all of their prospects to get consistent minutes, whether it be in New York or Hartford, Morrow would serve as a cheap, minute munching veteran to sit in the press box and only be called upon when needed.
Enjoy the game!
