Open Game Thread: New York Rangers vs New York Islanders
The Rangers are set to head into Bridgeport, where they’ll visit the New York Islanders for the final pre-season game of the 2019-20 campaign. The site of the game is Webster Bank Arena, home of the Islanders’ AHL affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Both of the Blueshirts’ visits to the Islanders will take place on Long Island rather than the Barlcays Center this season, so it appears the team won’t have to visit their house of horrors one final time.
The final pre-season game brings with it one final opportunity for the ream’s bubble players to state their case to make the opening night roster. With the team’s major line combinations mostly set for the regular season, tonight serves as a chance for players like Greg McKegg, Crsitoval Nieves, and Ryan Lindgren to shine.
Player to Watch: Brendan Smith
Set to skate as a winger flanking McKegg and Micheal Haley, Smith an use tonight’s game to demonstrate his utility to the team. With concerns about the team’s cap space being prevalent throughout the offseason, Smith’s hefty $4.35 million price tag is always one of the main targets. With surplus of NHL quality forwards and defenseman around him, Smith’s only stake to a roster spot would be his “ability” to serve as both the 7th defenseman and 13th forward, while only taking up one roster spot. His performance on the wing tonight could determine whether he starts the season on Broadway or in Hartford.
Enjoy the game!
