Rangers Agree to Terms With Brandon Scanlin

The New York Rangers have taken care of business with a restricted free agent... just not the one you probably were thinking of. Brandon Scanlin was set to go to arbitration, although the Rangers haven't gone to an actual hearing since the case of Nikolai Zherdev in 2009, and the outcome isn't that groundbreaking.

Scanlin filing for arbitration, and subsequently settling, means the Rangers will have access to a second buyout window. During this 48-hour window the Rangers are able to cut ties with any player making $4 million or more that was on their reserve list prior to the most recent trade deadline. There isn't a logical player that fits the parameters to be bought out, so I wouldn't expect anything on that front.

As for Scanlin, the AHL rearguard has a line of 4-12-16 in 76 regular season games, and a lone assist in 9 playoff games. He skated in 98 NCAA games at the University of Nebraska-Omaha and finished with 11 goals and 51 assists for 62 points. He will skate decent minutes for the Wolf Pack, and he's a 24-year-old who can continue to develop and be a tertiary depth option in the event all hell breaks lose.
