While Berard and Chmelar have both had their moments, these transactions surely come in an attempt to address the Rangers' offensive shortcomings. In 11 games played since his recall, Brett Berard has yet to collect a point. The same goes for Chmelar who has just seven penalty minutes to show for in his six games with the big club highlighted by his first career fight.
In 19 games played in the AHL, Othmann has collected four goals and six assists for a total of ten points. Three of those goals have come in his last four outings with the Wolf Pack. Up to this point, Othmann has had just one chance to make an impression with the Rangers this season but struggled to find his game in an outing against the Calgary Flames.
As for Perreault, in 20 games played, he has ten goals and seven assists to show for, just a few shy of a point-per-game pace. He’s struggled a bit in his last four outings but had back-to-back two goal nights at the end of November and into December. Perreault got a bit of an extended look and even picked up an assist for his first career points in one of three games with the Rangers this season.
Both players have as good of a chance as they could possibly ask for seeing as the Rangers largest concern right now is offensive production. If either one of them can find a way to put the puck in the back of the net, it will not only help them make a case to stick around, but will seriously help the Rangers in a time they need it most. It's unclear where exactly they'll play in the lineup but it's a good guess that Perreault will slot in in the top six with Othmann somewhere in the middle.
They will both be options for the Rangers tomorrow as they hit the road to take on the St. Louis Blues.
