Rangers Sign Goaltender Alexander Georgiev

The New York Rangers have signed goaltending prospect Alexander Georgiev to an entry-level contract, according to Cap Friendly.

Georgiev, 21, attended Rangers’ summer prospect camp a few weeks back. Georgiev has been a teammate of Rangers prospects Tarmo Reunanen (2016 fourth-round pick) and Patrik Virta (2017 seventh-round pick) at TPS in Finland. The Moscow-born goaltender represented Russia at the 2016 U20 World Junior Championships and earned a silver medal in the competition. Though memory is fleeting, my recollection of Georgiev at the WJC is that he was just okay. However, he’s built a strong resume in Finland the last few seasons. Rangers’ goaltending guru Benoit Allaire usually attends these prospect camps to evaluate and advise the Rangers’ goaltending prospects. Presumably he gave the thumbs up to management, and the Rangers signed him

Magnus Hellberg’s departure to the KHL meant that the Rangers lacked a dependable starter for Hartford and injury call-up. It will be a three-way battle between Georgiev, Brandon Halverson, and Chris Nell, but Georgiev has to be the presumed favorite given his resume. His addition to the prospect pool further solidifies the Rangers as having one of the top crops of young goalies in the entire NHL.
