Rangers vs. Hurricanes: What They Deserved

Igor Shesterkin dragged the Rangers to overtime, but once they got there, the lack of talent and offense was impossible to hide.

  • What? Did you expect the New York Rangers to win a game in overtime without J.T. Miller?
  • This was one of those games where the Rangers were somehow in things (Igor Shesterkin), even though they were getting their heads caved in by pretty much every conceivable metric. The power play actually scored a goal, sure, but the penalty kill went 1-for-3 and the Rangers were dominated in shots 34 to 19. In overtime Carolina took four shots and the Rangers took zero. (Carolina did have a full two minute power play with two minutes left in OT.)
  • K'Andre Miller had an assist in 22 minutes of time tonight for Carolina. Scott Morrow (who did get a tribute, surprisingly) played just over 13 minutes and was taken off the point of the power play. Not sure I understand that one, but Vladislav Gavrikov did score a goal on a puck passed to the point, shockingly, so there's that.
  • Another game where the Rangers have long periods of just no sustained offense or shots. Five shots in the first period, five in the third. None in overtime. I know Adam Fox and Miller are still out, but it's just not good enough at all.
