'We're Going to Have to Earn It Every Day': Drury, Sullivan Address Media Ahead of Preseason
With preseason on deck, Rangers brass address lineup questions, leadership decisions, and Panarin’s contract future.

With preseason around the corner and the full training camp roster dropping last night, New York Rangers general manager Chris Drury and new head coach Mike Sullivan addressed the media this afternoon.
“I so look forward to the opportunity to get on the ice with these guys.”

Before taking any questions, Drury made sure to send his condolences to the Giacomin family following the passing of Rangers legend Eddie Giacomin just a few days ago.
Anytime a new season begins, expectations are one of the biggest talking points. Despite taking a massive step backwards last season, it appears that the expectation regarding this team contending for a championship remains the same.
Did last season's playoff miss force Drury to recalibrate his expectations for this #NYR group?

"The expectations haven't changed. We always try to get off to a good start. Have a good training camp. You can't win the whole thing without getting in the playoffs. We want to just…
One of the other big news pieces that came this week resulted from the team announcing J.T. Miller as the 29th captain in franchise history. Drury and Sullivan spoke a bit about the decision to name Miller captain as well as the decision to leave the rest of the leadership group intact.

Drury said there was no interest in taking away a letter from Fox, Panarin or Zibanejad. The team feel they are good leaders and believes Trocheck deserved to be in the letter-wearing group, too.

As we spoke extensively this summer about Mika Zibanejad’s place in the lineup being one of the biggest questions of the offseason, Sullivan addressed where we can expect him to slot in to start the season. Sullivan has alluded to the fact that Mika Zibanejad may stay on the right wing of Miller’s line to start the season and further solidified that today. However, he did mention that they could explore some options to start the season, potentially even who their third linemate could be.
Sullivan on lineup: "I would envision us exploring combinations in the top six."

He did say he sees Mika Zibanejad starting at RW on JT Miller's line. Sounds like both players told him that's their preference.#NYR
While he didn’t outright say Alexis Lafrenière could be the left winger on that line, he did mention that they may try him on both the left and right side. However, Sullivan does have a tendency to like guys playing their off hand, indicating it could make sense to keep Lafrenière with Trocheck and Panarin.
#NYR Mike Sullivan: "You may see Laf on both sides."

Sullivan's take on Alexis Lafreniere:
— Colin Stephenson (@ColinSNewsday) September 17, 2025
"I would envision us exploring combinations... You may see Laf on both sides, and we'll figure out through that process what combinations we think give us the best chance to succeed.''
He did say he personally likes guys on their off wing.
Sullivan also spoke about the importance of paying Zibanejad a visit in Sweden this summer and getting the conversation going early as he needs to have a major bounce back season this year.
Sullivan first remarks stressed the time he put in building relationships with players over the summer and trying to take advantage of getting the HC job early to open lines of communication.

"It was important that we started that conversation early... It gives players an…
Regarding Zibanejad’s place in the lineup, Sullivan also spoke about how keeping him on the wing allows for others to potentially carve out roles with this team, specifically mentioning Jusso Parssinen who is currently the favorite for the third line center job.
Sullivan said, if they keep Mika at RW and load the top 6, he's envisioning a defensively conscious third line and that creates an identity for taking on tough assignments. As for 3C...

"There will be opportunities for a lot of players to see if they can fill those roles for…
He also mentioned how he wants the Rangers to have a defensively responsible third line that can take draws in their own end against other teams’ top players. Based on that, it sounds like defense is the priority but also mentioned that he wants them to be able to generate offense and play with strong awareness in all areas of the ice.
Mike Sullivan said he wants his third line to be able to take d-zone starts against other teams’ top lines, create some offense and play conscientiously. He said there will be bottom-six center opportunities for players and said Juuso Pärssinen is a potential candidate.

Another big talking point this summer was the uncertainty regarding Braden Schneider as he was finally going to have surgery to repair a torn labrum suffered two seasons prior. Drury informed the media that Schneider has been given clearance to give and receive contact, he won’t play much at the start of camp but will likely play two of the final three preseason games.
Drury says Braden Schneider won't play in intrasquad games in the next few days. He's able to give and receive contact and is expected to play in 2 of the final 3 preseason games, but they're taking it slow as he comes back from labrum surgery. #NYR

Lastly, Drury was asked about Artemi Panarin being a pending free agent and whether they were looking to sign him to an extension anytime soon. As always, Drury held his cards close to his chest but did offer some insight to how the franchise views Panarin.
On Artemi Panarin entering the final year of his contract and whether #NYR are hoping to re-sign him soon, Drury had this to say:

"He's a huge piece of our team and our organization. He does not appear to me to be slowing down. He takes the offseason serious. He looks like he's…
