The New York Rangers have began yet another win streak as they defeated the Vancouver Canucks 2-1 in regulation, and won their second consecutive game. Brett Howden scored his fourth of the year late in the third period, and that goal held up as the game-winner. Here is tonight’s goal breakdown.
Nikolay Goldobin (2) - Assists: Tyler Motte (2) & Ben Hutton (3)
Following a dominating opening period by the Vancouver Canucks, they were able to finally break the scoreless tie early in the second period. Just as the penalty expired, Nikolay Goldobin leaped out the penalty box, stole the puck from Neal Pionk and broke in on a partial breakaway. Goldobin was able to absolutely wire a quick wrist shot off of the crossbar and in behind Henrik Lundqvist to make it a 1-0 game.
Filip Chytil (1) - Assists: Chris Kreider (5) & Neal Pionk (7)
With the Ranges turning the corner in terms of their play, they were rewarded with the tying goal midway through the second period. Filip Chytil, who had numerous chances throughout the night, FINALLY buried his first goal of the season on the power play. Chytil was able to pounce on the rebound at the top of the crease, which was generated by a Neal Pionk point shot.
Brett Howden (2) - Assists: Jimmy Vesey (4) & Jesper Fast (6)
From the moment the Rangers tied the game, they were a completely different team in all three zones. They were quick on pucks, kept the Canucks to the outside, and were generating chances in the offensive zone. That eventually led to Brett Howden’s game-winning goal with under nine minutes remaining on a broken play in the right faceoff circle. After winning the faceoff, Howden stuck with the play, picked up the loose puck and fired a shot on net. Jacob Markstrom lost the puck in the scramble, and was completely fooled when Howden put a shot on net, and that made it a 2-1 game in favor of the Rangers.
Following tonight’s big win over the Canucks, the Rangers will have two scheduled off day’s before returning to action Thursday night against the New York Islanders.
